Anime editor’s choice “March Comes in Like a Lion”

Overview of the storyline of the anime

The main character is Rei Kiriyama, a 17-year-old boy who earns his living as a professional in a unique Japanese board game called Shogi. Shogi is a uniquely Japanese board game similar to chess, in which eight different types of frames are placed on a 9 x 9 square board, and the winner is the first to take the opponent’s king’s frame. There are more than 203 professional Shogi players in Japan, but only a handful of millionaires and billionaires play the game.

Overview of the anime

The first season aired on NHK from October 2016 to March 2017 and the second season from October 2017 to March 2018. The Japanese name for the anime is “3月のライオン (san-gatsu-no-lion)”. It is based on the comic of the same name. Animation production was done by the staff of the popular production company SHAFT, and the quality is top-notch. The cast includes Kengo Kawanishi as the main character Rei Kiriyama. Kana Hanazawa, one of Japan’s most popular and talented actresses, as the heroine Hinata Kawamoto. There are talented cast members such as Takahiro Sakurai, Akira Ishida and so on.

The reason for recommendation

Although there is no flashy action throughout the film, there are various problems and vulnerable people portrayed in the depiction of bullying and the conflicts in the relationship with the stepbrothers. Above all, the food portrayed in between the intervals looks delicious.

The kind of people recommended for this anime

I think this film will be sympathetic to teenagers and 20-somethings around the world who have problems in living. In fact, many comments from overseas fans have been posted on the theme song music video. I encountered this work when I was in junior high school and it gave me the courage to live each day.

Favourite line from the anime

My favorite line is the line of the main character’s senior and rival professional player, Kai Shimada. I was personaly saved by this line.

”Just because the differentce of the ability can’t be shrank, there is no reason for me not to keep moving forward.”

You can watch “March Comes in Like a Lion” on Amazon Prime, U-next, and Nicovideo (first episode is currently free) in Japanese.
